We have released the second volume of the IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE collection featuring motifs from the works of Ikko Tanaka, a renowned graphic designer.
Letters are at the heart of Ikko Tanaka's design. In this series they are expressed in drips, flows, and the blurred traces of ink. Buto Kaden #2, which pays homage to traditional calligraphy and Suibokuga (ink painting) and was also used as an expression in a poster, beautifully sublimates Japanese expression as modern design. It fuses the playfulness and joy of seeing traces of ink left from forceful brush strokes, synonymous with the strong and vivid world of graphic design.
【Face】Series The face motif is one of Tanaka's representative themes, making numerous appearances throughout his early to later works. This Face series, created in '90s, comprises extremely simple blocks of color. The subtle curves added to the straight lines construct faces. Coupled with colors reminiscent of Kasanenoirome (combination of colors created by the layering of garments) passed down from the Heian era of the 8th to 12th centuries, they create a highly original and bold graphic expression.
