Rope Series

Rope is a motif that Ikko Tanaka used for numerous graphic art works he produced. It is also incorporated in many of his designs, so it could be said to be an iconic item that is representative of Tanaka’s creations. In his works, Tanaka drew ropes by referring to Japanese-style knot tying techniques. At the same time, the ropes are never tightly tied. The aim is to show a knot’s complicated structure; it also makes us perceive a sense of flexibility and fluidity as if the rope is in the midst of becoming untied
