KURA Exhibition: BATIK
HaaT is a brand whose concept revolves around textiles. It is led by Makiko Minagawa, the textile director at ISSEY MIYAKE who has always been engaging in developing original materials.
This exhibition features one of HaaT’s latest creations “REAL BATIK”, from SPRING SUMMER 2019 season. BATIK refers to fabrics dyed with wax resist techniques.
The cracking pattern in shapes of dots on the lightweight, sheeny rayon twill shows the characteristics unique to the wax resist dyeing technique. Applying this technique to the thin rayon textile requires a high skill level done by veteran craftspeople in Kyoto, who carefully adjust the temperature and thickness of the wax coated on the textile. They first use a roller to apply wax through printing plates, and then with a paint brush they add details to complete the pattern, all made possible only by decades of experience in the technique.
This exhibition is a special showcase for “REAL BATIK”, looking at the craftsmanship of Kyoto by presenting the textile along with a slideshow of the technique.
