Exploring the symbiotic relationship between fashion and time, this exhibition presents 150 years of fashion along two parallel timelines. The first features sixty ensembles in chronological order from 1870 to the present. The second intersperses a series of sixty interruptions or disruptions that pre- or postdate the fashions in the first timeline but relate to them in terms of shape, motif, material, or technique. The sixty ensembles in each timeline are displayed in pairs, and they are primarily black to emphasize their changing silhouettes and interconnection. For example, the Flying Saucer in the 1990s on the first timeline is paired with early twentieth century designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo's “Delphos” Dress (ca. 1930) in the second timeline, illustrating the evolution and the universality of pleating technique.
